Is it safe to walk your dog right now?

PawCast fuses live weather, air quality, pollen, UV, and pavement temperature into a single 0–100 walk score — tuned to your dog's breed, size, age, and coat.

The engine

Seven factors. One number you can trust.

Pull the sliders. The score recalculates the same way your dog's actually does — weighted, wind-chill corrected, and overridden when storms hit.

Conditions

Live values your phone reads from Google's Weather, Air Quality, and Pollen APIs.

Dog profileMixed · 18 kg · 5 yr

Live walk score

Tuned for a 18 kg mixed-breed adult.

Cooler in 90 min — wait it out. Pavement 38°C · UV 5
Severe-weather override Inactive
Per-dog tuning

Same weather. Different verdicts.

A 28°C afternoon is a different planet for a thick-coated Husky than for a brachycephalic Frenchie. PawCast adjusts the weighting for breed, size, age, and coat — not just the temperature.

Best walk window

PawCast scans 96 hours ahead so you don't have to.

The hourly forecast for the next four days, scored and smoothed. Sleep hours suppressed, minimum-floor enforced, transitions softened — so you get one clear answer, not a chart to interpret.

Built for the walk itself — not just the planning.

Live walk tracker

GPS route + CoreMotion pedometer. Paw-burn warnings vibrate when pavement crosses your dog's threshold. Water-break reminders on long walks. Survives backgrounding and lock-screen.

Pack — multi-dog

Profiles for every dog with photo, breed, weight, coat. The score adapts per dog. Walk history, weekly streaks, and health trends are tracked separately for each of them.

Notifications that survive reboots

Daily forecasts, hot-pavement alerts, pollen spikes, AQI advisories, best-window reminders — all scheduled with UNCalendarNotificationTrigger so they fire even after the phone restarts.

Wind-chill correction

Cold doesn't act linearly — a 0°C breeze hits a Chihuahua differently than still air. PawCast applies the standard Environment Canada formula and re-weights the cold factor accordingly.

Health trends

Weekly minutes, distance, and elevation per dog. PawCast surfaces drops gently — useful for spotting joint or heat issues before your vet visit, not for guilting you.

Severe-weather override

Lightning, flood, tornado, ice storm — when the NWS issues a warning, PawCast caps the score at 30 and shows the alert at the top of the home screen. No exceptions.

Live walk

Real-time route. Real-time safety.

PawCast keeps reading conditions while you walk. If pavement crosses the burn threshold or a thunderstorm cell drifts in, your phone vibrates — and the route view shifts to a head-home banner.

  • GPS route, pace, elevation, and per-paw step count
  • Auto water-break reminders past 25 minutes
  • Background-location safe; survives lock screen and backgrounding
  • Privacy: routes stay on-device unless you share

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How does the walk score actually work?

Seven factors are weighted: heat 28%, pavement burn 18%, AQI 17%, precipitation 13%, pollen 12%, UV 8%, cold 4%. We apply wind-chill correction to the cold factor and a severe-weather override that caps the score at 30 during NWS warnings. The result is a single 0–100 number with a verdict.

Does the score really change per dog?

Yes. Brachycephalic breeds (Frenchies, Pugs, Boxers) get heavier heat weighting. Double-coated breeds (Huskies, Malamutes, Bernese) get reduced cold weighting. Senior dogs and toy breeds shift the floor. A Husky and a Frenchie can disagree by 30+ points in the same weather.

What's the Best Walk Window?

PawCast scans hourly forecasts for the next 96 hours, scores each hour for each dog in your pack, suppresses sleep hours so you never get a 2 AM suggestion, applies a minimum-floor rule, and smooths transitions so the chart doesn't whiplash. The single highest sustained window is surfaced.

Is live tracking battery-friendly?

PawCast uses iOS background location significant-change updates plus CoreMotion's step counter — both built for sustained low power. A 30-minute walk costs roughly 2–3% battery on a recent iPhone.

What does it cost?

PawCast Premium is required to use the app and is offered as $49.99 per year or $9.99 per week through the App Store. Pricing in your local currency is shown on the App Store before you buy. Cancel any time in iOS Settings → Subscriptions.

Which iOS versions are supported?

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, and later. PawCast is built natively in SwiftUI with a tailored iPad layout that scales fonts and adapts the home, walk, and pack screens for larger displays.

What about my data?

Walk routes, dog profiles, and history live on your device only. PawCast does not require an account, does not sync your data to its own servers, and never sells your data. The only data that leaves your device is the approximate area used to fetch weather, air quality, and pollen — proxied through our Cloudflare Worker to Google's APIs without any identifier attached.
